I. Working Principle
This system employs a two-stage reverse osmosis (RO) membrane separation technology, consisting of two串联 RO membrane stacks: the raw water is first subjected to pretreatment before being fed into the primary RO stage; the water produced at this stage then serves as feed water for the secondary RO stage, enabling further deep desalination. As a result, the final product water quality is significantly superior to that obtained with a single-stage system. The synergistic operation of these two stages increases the overall desalination rate of the system to ≥99% and further removes trace impurities such as TOC, SiO₂, and microorganisms; thus, this system is ideal for applications requiring high-purity water, such as in the electronics, pharmaceutical, and high-purity process water industries.
The two-stage RO system ensures a consistent output of high-quality demineralized water even when the influent water quality fluctuates through its "stepwise purification" approach; compared to a single-stage system, it offers superior advantages in both demineralization depth and water quality reliability.
• Two-stage series desalination: The primary water product is then subjected to secondary deep desalination, achieving progressive purification.
• Ultra-high desalination rate: Total system desalination rate ≥99% – superior water quality
• Stable and reliable: Consistently delivers high-purity demineralized water even under fluctuating feedwater conditions.
II. Process Flow
The system is divided into three major functional sections – Pre-treatment and Pressurization Section, Dual-Stage RO Desalination Section, and Product Water Distribution Section – with a rated production capacity of 10,000 L/h (approximately 10 m³/h).
Raw water → Raw water tank → Booster pump → Pretreatment (multi-media filter / activated carbon filter / water softener / safety filter)
↓
Primary high-pressure pump → Primary RO membrane stack
↓ (Primary treated water)
Secondary high-pressure pump → Secondary RO membrane stack (automatic backwashing)
↓ (RO treated water; total desalination rate ≥ 99%)
Water production tank → Distribution pump (constant pressure) → Water usage point
(Concentrated wastewater discharged in compliance with regulatory standards or reused)
① Pre-treatment and Boosting Section
The raw water is first buffered in a raw water storage tank, then sequentially passed through a multi-media filter, an activated carbon filter, a softening/scalper unit, and a protective filter to remove suspended solids, colloids, residual chlorine, hardness, and fine particles. A booster pump stabilizes the water supply pressure, providing clean, protected feed water for the primary RO membrane.
② Two-stage RO desalination section
The pretreated water is pumped by a primary high-pressure pump into a primary RO membrane stack for initial desalination; the resulting product water is then pressurized by a secondary high-pressure pump before being fed into a secondary RO membrane stack for secondary deep desalination, which further removes residual dissolved salts, TOC, SiO₂, and microorganisms; the treated water is stored in the product water tank. The system is equipped with an automatic low-pressure flushing function during startup and shutdown to mitigate concentration polarization and membrane fouling.
③ Water Distribution Section
The RO treated water is buffered in a water storage tank before being delivered to all water usage points via a distribution pump operating at constant pressure; the entire system is controlled by a PLC-based interlinked control system, with real-time monitoring and interlocking mechanisms for liquid level, pressure, flow rate, and conductivity.
III. Application Areas
This system is designed for advanced desalination applications where stringent water quality requirements apply – such as in the electronics, pharmaceutical, and high-purity process industries – and is primarily used in the following scenarios:
• Electronic industry ultrapure water pre-treatment: pre-desalination for ultrapure water systems used in semiconductors, display panels, etc.
• Pharmaceutical Purified Water / Water for Injection: Pre-treatment for the preparation of pharmaceutical purified water and water for injection
• High-purity process water: For high-purity solution preparation and cleaning applications in the chemical, fine manufacturing, and related industries.
• High-quality feedwater for industrial boilers: high-quality desalinated make-up water for power plants, heating systems, etc.
• Sea water / Brackish water desalination: Deep desalination of water sources with medium to high salinity
• Laboratory and analytical water: high-purity water for analytical testing, reagent preparation, etc.
